Guild Renown Frequently Asked Questions

What is Renown?

Renown is a system that was developed to do two primary things: Allow guilds to be "ranked" by how "productive" they are and to reward guilds with additional goodies for being "productive." Each individual gains a bit of Renown depending upon what he/she does, which helps to contribute to the guild's total renown score.

There are three types of Renown: Artistry, Glory, and Valor.

NOTE: Never judge a guild based upon its renown score! You may find yourself sorely disappointed in what you find.

What is Artistry?

Artistry is gained whenever you create something through crafting. Whether crafting gems, armor, or items for a guild city, you gain an amount of renown based upon the item's level and rarity of components.

What is Glory?

Glory is gained through PVP. You may gain this type of renown by participating in mini-games or by simply going out and slaughtering people (if you are on a PVP server).

Additional Glory is gained upon the completion of a mini-game.

What is Valor?

Valor is gained whenever you go out and slaughter mobs, turn in tradeskill quests, and do some quests (such as the Destiny quest line and the Villas). This also includes participating in raids, where you can earn a lot more Valor than by simply running around killing picts, nemedians, and craterspawn.

This type of renown scales with your level, the level of your opponent, and the type of opponent, but does not stop when you reach level 80. Epic mobs will always yield more renown than normal mobs, and the completion of a raid instance will yield a lot more, still.

Using an XP Potion can boost the amount of Valor you receive per kill, even at level 80.

The amount of Valor you receive can degenerate when facing mobs of eight levels or more below you (marked with a white target circle). Killing these mobs only grants 1 Valor point (two with XP potions). Some of the boss encounters -- primarily in Cistern and Main System, Prison Colony, Ymir's Pass, and any other instance that usually requires the assistance of a level 80 character -- are an exception to this rule, however.

How are guild rankings determined using Renown?

Each week, the top fifty renown scores in a guild are added together. This is done for each guild in the game, and the scores are then compared and ranked from highest to lowest. This is why a small guild that is much more productive can beat out a guild with a couple hundred members that is not very active at all.

Unfortunately, the ranking system is not perfect. While having a high Ranking is a nice thing to brag about, it isn't the end of the world if your guild is not ranked. Things such as RolePlay events and other guild events that do not gather renown are not taken into consideration in this system. Additionally, guilds that do a lot of events could simply be doing a lot of events that do not gather much renown. Therefore, a very active guild can still have a low renown score.

What rewards to guilds get for going up in rank?

For each rank of Renown, a guild receives new NPCs that offer goodies, buildings, etc. For a complete list of items offered at each rank, please see the information concerning the Renown Items for that rank.
